The topic for this talk is how to be happy even when shit happens, which it inevitably will. Human beings will always experience pain and sorrow. This is the 1st Noble Truth and we see it in our lives. How do we remain happy amidst this?
This includes our own pain and sorrow and the pain we see in the world. We will dive into this question looking at what is pain and sorrow, and how it relates to happiness. I will look at personal examples and the lived experience of others in approaching this question. Finally, I will conclude with practices that help us be happy no matter what happens in our lives.
Here is the quote from Rumi:
“When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety;
if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain.
From this, I understand that what I want, also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me.
There is a great secret here for anyone who can grasp it.”
And the practice from the Dali Lama:
- Spend 5 minutes at the beginning of each day remembering we all want the same thing (to be happy and loved) and we are all connected.
- Spend 5 minutes cherishing yourself and others. Let go of judgments. Breathe in cherishing yourself and breathe out cherishing others. If the faces of people you are having difficulty with appear, cherish them as well.
- During the day extend that attitude to everyone you meet ‑ we are all the same, and I cherish myself and you [do it with the shop assistant, your clients, your family, colleagues, etc.].
- Stay in the practice, no matter what happens.”
I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday at 7 pm EST. Details at www.payattention.ca
